The July-August 1958 issue of The Military Engineer included the story of how the Greek governor (later Roman Emperor) Hadrian solved Athens’ water shortage by commissioning a 15-mi underground aqueduct in 134 A.D. Incredibly, the aqueduct remained the city’s primary water supply system for nearly 1,800 years.
