The Heidelberg Post serves the general south-eastern regional area of Germany. Draw an East-West line across Germany at the town of Darmstadt (about 15 miles south of Frankfurt). At the Rhein River, draw the line south, following the Rhein to Switzerland. The area encompassed by this E-W line, the Rhein River, and the southern and eastern boundaries of Germany is the area served by the Heidelberg Post.
The Heidelberg Post started life in 1953 as the second post in Europe. Until the draw down following the "Fall of the Wall" in 1989, the Heidelberg Post served only the Engineer communities in Heidelberg and Mannheim, Germany. In 1991, the Karlsruhe Post closed, and the Heidelberg post absorbed the membership. In 1994, the Heidelberg Post absorbed the remnants of the Stuttgart Post, and in 1997, the post absorbed the Northern Bavaria post (formerly Ansbach post). In 1998, the European Region formally delineated the boundaries of the remaining posts in Europe, so that each post would have a general area of responsibility.
The Heidelberg Post serves the military communities in Ansbach, Darmstadt, Garmisch, Grafenwoehr, Heidelberg, Mannheim, Schweinfurt, Stuttgart, Vilseck, and Wuerzburg, as well as the areas in between these communities, and their respective sub-communities.
The Heidelberg Post meets monthly for a General Membership Meeting, usually on a Wednesday. These meetings are usually held during the lunch hour at a local area restaurant, during which we endeavor to have an entertaining guest speaker with a topic of interest to the membership. Guest speakers may come from the military community as well as from the local civilian environment. If you would like to be a guest speaker at one of our luncheon meetings, or are interested in knowing more about our general membership monthly programs, please contact the Programs Director at DSN 370-6544 or 06221-57-6544 for additional information.
The Heidelberg Post is proud to have an active Scholarship program, and in the past several years, has awarded up to four $1,000 scholarships each year. One of these scholarships is the Ed Byrne Scholarship, which is awarded to outstanding high school seniors for their college studies in their freshman year. Another scholarship is the Continuing Education Scholarship, for college sophomores, juniors and seniors, to help with the expenses in later years. It is recommended that all prospective candidates write to the Heidelberg Post Scholarship Director in the fall semester, as the cut-off date for application submissions is April, with the scholarship award to be made in June. The address is: SAME Heidelberg Post, Attn: Scholarship Director, CMR 420, Box 1311, APO AE 09063.
