Our March guest speakers will be members of the University of Illinois Student Chapter of Engineers Without Borders – USA (EWB-USA).  EWB-USA is a non-profit humanitarian organization established to partner with developing communities worldwide, in order to improve their quality of life.  This partnership involves the implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while involving and training internationally responsible engineers and engineering students.  EWB–USA is comprised of over 12,000 members.  Members get involved by joining one of over 250 geographically-based chapters.  Chapters are the foundation of the organization.  They serve as the primary meeting place for the members, functioning as a forum for members to plan projects and carry out EWB-USA’s mission.  Chapters meet on a regular basis.  Chapter members get involved with projects, participate in the planning of events, and meet like-minded professionals and students.  The chapters are comprised of both engineers and non-engineers alike.  EWB-USA welcomes students and professionals from all trades, including: public health, anthropology, geology, business, communications, and graphic design.  For more information on joining or starting an EWB-USA chapter, visit their website at http://www.ewb-usa.org/ .

Brian Roehl is the President of the local University of Illinois Student Chapter of EWB-USA and Project Leader of the Stored Energy Solar Cooker Project.  Brian and some of his colleagues will provide more details on what the local EWB-USA student chapter is all about.

For example, a team has been working on a water project for a remote area in the Nigerian State of Enugu.  The work entails drilling a bore-hole, sinking a submersible pump, and installing a water reservoir (10,000 gallons) and water distribution system, to supply potable water to the surrounding villages.  The distribution pipeline will have various access points over a distance of about two and a half kilometers, serving the small neighboring communities.  The area does not have any public power supply, so the team will also provide a power source for operating the pump.  The local EWB-USA group also has similar projects in Kenya, Ghana, Cameroon, Mexico, and Guatemala.
