RECENT SPONSORSHIPS
2011 QDMA Military Youth Hunt

As part of our continued effort to support service members and their families across our region, the Kentuckiana Post SAME helped sponsor the Quality Deer Management Association's Military Youth Hunt. The hunt was spearheaded by the Derby City and Bourbon Trail Branches of the QDMA. The purpose of the hunt was to make sure the children of service members wouldn’t be left at home during this season’s youth hunt weekend held on October 8-9 across the state of Kentucky.

Of the 30 kids who participated, 17 came from Fort Campbell, six from Fort Knox, two from the Navy, and four from families with a
member in the National Guard.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Wow, the year is speeding by. It seems like I was just writing the last newsletter message. I want to start off this message with some really good news. National SAME informed us recently that we received all five streamers for our activities in 2011 – Membership, Outreach and Communication, Relationships and Recognition, Education and Training, and Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security. The last two we won with distinction. Great work to all who prepared the narrative that helped win the Streamers, and to all who participated and made this possible!

I challenged our membership in the last newsletter to excel in what we do in four key areas. Two of those we have already been working on with success – professional development and K-12 Outreach. With regards to professional development, the Post is sponsoring FEMA Training. Final logistics regarding the site are being worked out, but the dates are April 26 and 27 in Louisville. This free training will help prepare individuals who want to volunteer to help FEMA during disaster response and recovery activities. More information can be found in this newsletter and on the Post website.

The K-12 Outreach success was achieved with the recent Chapter and State Competitions for MATHCOUNTS. Now in its 27th year, this nationwide competition reaches out to thousands of middle school students to come together and compete on the local, state and national level. The Kentuckiana Post has been a major sponsor for the State competition and the Louisville Chapter competition for several years. We also have many Post members participate in various volunteer capacities – working hotel logistics, proctoring and grading the tests, and in many other ways. The top four finishers at the State competition go on to represent Kentucky at the national competition in Washington D.C. in early May.

The Post is very active right now, and that is a result of all of the hard work the committees are doing to maintain the Kentuckiana Post as one of the premiere Posts in SAME. There is always room for help on our committees. Be on the look-out for a volunteer recruitment form from our Membership Committee and Public Relations Committee to explain what our committees do and offer you a chance to become involved in the Post.
