SAME MONTHLY MEETING March 17, 2010 11:30 a.m.

Who: Aaron Immel, PE, CFM, CBI   Mr. Immel is an Assistant Vice President with Volkert, Inc and has been with the company for 15 years.  He currently manages the Mobile office’s Bridge Inspection Program.  Mr. Immel has been the Project Manager and a Field Team Leader for this project since it was awarded to Volkert in 2005.

Richard Parker, PE, CBI   Mr. Parker is a Senior Structural Engineer with Volkert, Inc and has been with the company for a total of 17 years.  He has also been a Field Team Leader for this project since 2005, and has been the Team Leader in the inspection of all of the bridges that Volkert has inspection in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Louisville District.

Topic: The FHWA-EFLHD Bridge Inspection Program  For the last five years, Volkert, Inc. has provided bridge inspection services to the Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division of the FHWA.  The EFLHD is responsible for nearly 2300 bridges located on federal lands – which include National parks and monuments, as well as bridges owned by other entities including the Washington Metropolitan Airport Authority and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Louisville District.  The presentation will cover the types of bridges found in the program, and the challenges of mobilizing and inspecting bridges in over 23 states while Volkert has been a partner to the EFLHD.

2010 SAME Engineering Scholarship - Applications Due April 1

To encourage and assist qualified students who wish to pursue a college education in the field of engineering so that they, in turn, might further the goals and exemplify the ideals of SAME, the Mobile Post is pleased to announce it will sponsor a $2,000 Engineering Scholarship to be awarded for the 2010 Fall Semester.  To be eligible for the SAME Scholarship, applicants must:

• Be a full-time student at the University of South Alabama,
• Have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, and
• Have a declared major in Engineering or Engineering-related Sciences.

Selection of the 2010 SAME Scholarship Recipients will be based on the following criteria:

• Scholastic achievement
• Military and/or Engineering Work Experience
• Leadership
• Evidence of good character and well-rounded personal development
• Dedication to achieving a career in the field of Engineering

HOW TO APPLY:

1. Complete the SAME Scholarship Application.
2. Write a personal essay about why you have chosen to pursue a career in the field of Engineering and what you hope to accomplish.
3. Furnish one copy of your most recent transcript.
4. Submit the Application, Personal Essay, and Transcript no later than April 1, 2010

The SAME Post Leaders Workshop was held in Alexandria, VA at the Hotel Monaco on 10-11 September, 2009.  We had a great time and many questions were answered and hopefully everyone left with the necessary tools and information needed to help your Posts continue successfully. The next SAME Post Leaders Workshop is scheduled to be held on March 4-5, 2010 in Dallas, Texas. This workshop will be held in conjunction with the student workshop.  The registration will open up in December.
