One of the missions of the SAME Pikes Peak Post (PPP) is to support the families of the military who are deployed from Colorado. The PPP Board of Directors voted Sept 12 to support The Home Front Cares (THFC), a 501(c)3 corporation which is a volunteer, non-profit organization. THFC provides emergency financial assistance, goods and services to familes of Active Duty, Activated Reserves and National Guard troops serving in harm’s way from the Pikes Peak and Denver Region.

Programs include Energy Assistance Program, Wounded Troops Fund, and Phil Long’s Operation Home Support. An estimated $500,000 has been given to more than 1,700 beneficiaries since 2003. Examples of their mission include:

• Phil Long car dealers, through the company’s liaison officer Dom Cimino, assist with emergency transportation needs, such as those of the mother of three whose husband had been in Iraq for 10 months and who had her children in the car on Academy Boulevard when the front end of their vehicle collapsed. The car was towed and repaired.

• THFC shipped 14 coolers, 28 folding chairs, and 28 air mattresses with air pumps to the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Iraq from Fort Carson. The unit had a fire in the barracks when they were out on patrol and lost everything down to their socks. They asked for help in replacing items for 28 soldiers that were not Army issue, but comfort items that they had purchased that make life over there a little more bearable.

• THFC continues to pay incidental expenses of a military family member(s) traveling to visit a seriously wounded service member facing extended hospitalization in the United States or overseas.
